MOUNT BEACH SURF

Mount Maunganui Beach is located 5 kilometres north of Tauranga on the East Coast of the North Island. The main beach itself is approximately 700 metres in length and 50 metres wide.

The beach is white sand and there are very large shell deposits. There are rocky headlands at the northwestern end of the beach where the Mount is located.

SURFING SUMMARY

Mount Maunganui Beach is very popular surfing location when there is any sort of wave. There is a great deal of surfers in the area and they flock when the swell is big enough to surf. There is often a good left-hand wave off the northern end and a good right hand wave at the southern end.

The beach can be surfed on all tides and is offshore in a south to southwest Nearest Surf club is Mt Maunganui.



OMANU BEACH SURF

Omanu Beach is located 5 kilometres southeast of Mount Maunganui. The beach extends from Mount Maunganui Beach at the northern end to the Papamoa Beach in the south. Omanu Surf Life Saving Club is located at the end of Surf Road, where there is a small car parking area. The sand dunes are fenced off with numerous walkways running down to the shore.

The beach is white sand with a small scattering of shells across the beachfront. At low tide a great deal of beach is visible and the sand slopes gently into the ocean.

SURFING SUMMARY

Surfing is very popular at Omanu Beach. There is commonly good surfing bars, with both left and right-hand waves coming in all along the beach. The beach is surfable on all tides, and it is offshore in a south to southwest wind. Good surf can be found nearly anywhere along the beach so surfers will have to search to find the best waves with the least crowds.
